Doron’s Background

Early Background

Born:  May 8, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, to Doron K. And Mira S. Antrim (nee Stevens).

Grew up (ages 4 through 16) in Stony Brook, NY, a then sleepy village on the Long Island Sound.

Elementary school: Stony Brook.  Intermediate and High School: Port Jefferson, NY.  Active in music; played trombone in all groups, also in the Stony Brook Fire Department band.

Started working at 11 biking throughout town delivering special delivery letters for the U.S. Post Office.  Worked summers and part-time during school at the local drug store, followed by the local food market.  Saved enough money to buy my first trombone.

Loved fishing for trout at the local mill pond and for salt water fish on the Long Island Sound.  Loved quietly cruising throughout the harbor in my rowboat with small outboard as sunset faded into twilight.

My youth was idyllic:  total love and support at home with freedom to enjoy nature while gaining a  strong work ethic.

College: I left Stony Brook to attend Syracuse University in a pre-theology program; my mother wanted me to be a preacher and I wanted to please her.  But this calling faded as I lived with my businessman uncle while attending Syracuse and I transferred to engineering after my first year.  Early marriage caused me to move to New Jersey and transfer to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).  I graduated, Cum Laude, from NJIT in 1964 with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering (Management Option).

While at Syracuse I earned tuition and expenses working summers and during school months in a business my uncle set up for me with machine tools in his basement.  After moving to New Jersey I attended NJIT in the evenings while working full time and raising a family.
