Dr. Seale’s Interpretation of the 23rd Psalm (Approximate)

This interpretation is what I recall learning from Dr. Seale as a young adult.  It has been a powerful force in my life and spiritual development ever since; I see my life as a testament to its truth.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

I am as a sheep in a flock, a sheep with faith that the shepherd who looks over me, my Lord, ensures that my needs are met.  I am free to focus my concerns on others’ needs.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

My shepherd provides me with ample food and water and a soft bed upon which to rest and sleep; he leads me out of life’s inevitable storms into peace and tranquility.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

My shepherd directs and guides me on the path of right living, and leads me back when I have strayed.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

While I live in a world with much spiritual death – pain, suffering, and physical death that humans bring to each other – my shepherd protects me, he nudges me back onto the track of spiritual life when I stray, a track of goodness and mercy.  I fear neither spiritual nor physical death.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

As I interface with others in my life and work I fear not those who would oppose me or harm me, for I am guided and directed by the Lord.  And the wisdom and power of my Lord knows no bounds.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

When I live with my Lord life is good, bountiful, joyous , and, when I face the inevitable challenges of physical and emotional hurt and pain, life is merciful, my Lord’s guidance and love heals and restores me.
