Humans as Stewards
I live to serve Life, to contribute my skills and talents to supporting others, nature, and our planet, to the best of my ability.
I believe that humans are inexorably linked with all of nature. Our origins go back to the first single celled existence of life on planet earth, and progressed much later through a variety of invertebrate mammals. Our animalistic behavior was indistinguishable from other animals in our species until we started to evolve toward our present form less than one million years ago (a hair’s breadth in evolutionary time). Yes, our accomplishments have distinguished us from our ancestors over those years, particularly in the last few thousand years. But the fact remains that we have grown out of soil that nourishes all of nature; we are one with all forms of life (e.g., researchers claim that a high percentage of our DNA is shared by worms).
I rejoice in this realization and approach all life forms with admiration and joy; admiration of the “design” of each life form, of how it works, both singly and together with its surrounding life forms. And I am so awed by the beauty of our companion life forms: animals, birds, fish, plants, etc. Then there is the interdependency of life forms, how no species or type of life is an island onto itself. Rather, how it depends on others for its life. I see all of nature as a gigantic ecosystem of interdependency.
And I believe that humans are evolving from our purely animalistic origins into a position of stewardship over all of nature. I believe that the ultimate human nature is not the selfish, greedy motives that may dominate the world today, motives that cause us to bring irreparable harm onto each other, onto other life forms, and onto our planet. I believe that we are evolving into a state in which the caring for others, the compassionate side of our nature will prevail, and we will be stewards of all life on earth. We will apply the intellect that distinguishes us to understand and treat all life with love and respect. We will rejoice in the natural flow of nature and interfere only to help and sustain it.
In short, I believe that the Divine Life Force gives me a god-
